What is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and shortly after childbirth. Unlike medical professionals, doulas do not provide clinical care or offer medical advice. Rather, a doula can educate their clients on the various aspects of child birth and act as a medical advocate to ensure that the birth team respects these wishes.
What are the benefits of hiring a doula?
Shorter Labors
Women who receive continuous support from a doula often experience shorter labor durations; on average, up to 25% shorter than those without one.
Fewer Medical Interventions
Doula-supported births are associated with a significant reduction in the need for:
- Cesarean sections (up to 28% lower)
- Epidural or pain medication use
- Pitocin (labor-inducing drugs)
Increased Spontaneous Vaginal Births
Doulas increase the likelihood of having a spontaneous vaginal birth, reducing the chance of surgical or assisted deliveries.
Higher Satisfaction with the Birth Experience
Women with birth doulas report feeling a greater sense of control, support, and overall satisfaction with their birth experience.
Better Outcomes for Babies
Babies born with doula support may have:
- Higher Apgar scores (a quick test of newborn health which evaluates five key areas: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration)
- Lower rates of NICU admission
- Better initiation of breastfeeding
What does a flow state look like in labor?
Achieving a flow state during labor is more than a state of focus—it’s a profound alignment of the mind, body, and spirit working together in harmony. When a woman enters a flow state, she becomes fully immersed in the rhythm of labor. Her thinking mind softens, allowing instinct and intuition to lead. The physical body takes over with powerful purpose, and the spirit often feels more present, more open, and deeply connected to something greater—whether that’s the baby, her inner strength, or a higher power.
In this space, distractions fall away. Breathing becomes intentional. Movement is guided not by thought, but by sensation. Time can feel suspended, and even the intensity of contractions may be experienced differently, not as suffering, but as participation in something sacred.
Reaching this state is not about perfection or performance. It’s about safety, trust, and support. When a woman feels prepared, respected, and free to labor in her own way, flow can arise naturally. It allows her to stay grounded in her body, clear in her mind, and open in her spirit—fully present for the miracle of birth.
As your guide and support, I help hold the space for this connection to unfold, gently protecting your focus so you can move through labor with grace, confidence, and deep inner knowing.
What kind of birth settings do you support?
I support births whether they are at a hospital, home, or birth center.
Do you only support unmedicated births?
No, not at all. I support all kinds of births whether they are medicated or unmedicated, vaginal or cesarean. My goal is to support your choices, whatever they may be.
When should I hire a doula?
You can hire a doula at any point in your pregnancy, but earlier is often better. This gives us more time to get to know each other, build trust, and prepare for your ideal birth experience.
